OBITUARY.

Editors Ledger :--Mabel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. C. COWEN, living three miles southeast of Packwood, died Feb. 27th, aged four years, six months, 27 days. She was the happiness and love of the family and neighborhood. Words would fail to describe this pure little pet that God sent into this home. The family has the hearty sympathy of the entire community, but this can not restore her to them. She has gone. She turned from all earth to the God given crown of an endless life, and is a welcomed guest of the home of the pure. But shadows have come upon her earthly home, and we can not understand how God doeth all things well. "But if we could stand within and all God's workings see we could for each mystery find a key." Then be content, poor souls; God's plans like lilies pure and white unfold; we can not tear the close sheet leaves apart; time will reveal the folds of gold; then what a sweet reunion it will be. No more can the tireless reaper come and lay low all the sweet desires of the soul, no more can the silver cord and golden bowl of a cherished existence be broken, no more will the harp of love be unstrung, no more will the song of angels sound but dimly on the listening ear, no more will shadows flit across the sun lit river, but holy joy not mantled with sorrow will help us to take to our heart the spirit of little Mabel once more, and we shall live and love her through eternal ages. The funeral sermon was preached at her home by the Rev. J. A. Abbott to a large audience of sympathizing friends and neighbors.

Pastor.

Note: Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, in Fairfield, IA, in Lot 1st.024. Some discrepancies exist with regard to her age. Her obituary notes an age of four years, six months, 27 days; her gravestone is engraved with the age of *one year*, six months, 27 days. If she was four and a half when she died, then she would appear with the family in the 1885 IA State Census which was taken on April 20, 1885 ... no child younger than six is listed there however. The transcription of this stone when it was read around 1990 notes a death date and an age, but no birthdate, which was common for the time. The age of "1Y 6M 27D" is still quite discernable.
