FORMER FAIRFIELD RESIDENT KILLED

Word was received in the city this morning that H. D. COOK had been killed at Little Rock, Ark.

Deceased ran a flour and feed barn here about fifteen years ago in the building where John Rumer how has his paint shop.

No particulars are known regarding his death.

FUNERAL SERVICES OF H. D. COOK WERE HELD HERE SUNDAY

H. D. COOK was killed at Little Rock, Ark. Feb. 15 (sic - 14th), was shipped to the city Sunday on No. 9 and buried in Evergreen cemetery. Rev. Duckett had charge of the funeral. The Masons had charge of the services at the grave.

Mr. COOK came to Fairfield about twenty-five years ago and engaged in the feed business with Williams in the building now occupied by Mr. Rumer.

Mr. COOK was one of the two first rural carriers here and C. B. McPeek was the other one.

After selling the feed business he was night watchman for some time. From Fairfield he went to Keota where he ran a hotel for some time. During the war Mr. COOK was guard in an aviation camp. for the past two years he has been employed as guard in the railroad yards at Little Rock, Ark. Last Tuesday morning COOK had been at work in the yards about an hour when a shot was fired at him from an unknown source. A man standing at a distance heart the shot and saw him fall. He ran for help and when he returned Mr. COOK was dead and his own gun was gone.

As yet no clew (sic - archaic 'clue') has been found which appoints to the assassin.

DEATHS

COOK, H. D.--Died at Little Rock, Ark., February 15 (sic - 14th). The body was shipped to this city and burial made in Evergreen cemetery, with the Masonic order in charge of the services at the grave.

Mr. COOK was a resident of Fairfield up until a little more than twenty years ago. He was enganged in the feed business in the old frame building opposite the present post office. Later he served as night policeman. He was one of the first two rural mail carriers to serve from the Fairfield post office.

Mr. COOK came to his death by an assassin's bullet. He was employed as a guard in the railraod yards in the Arkansas city and was shot from ambush by an assassin whose identity has been learned. He was about sixty years of age.
