Charles W. CLARK, 85, died Wednesday afternoon at the Jefferson County hospital of injuries suffered in a traffic accident south of Fairfield last Saturday.

CLARK, 709 S. Fourth St., is the county's fifth traffic fatality of the year. All five fatal accidents occurred on Highway 1.

Last rites will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Weston Behner Funeral home in charge of the Rev. Ronald Kinzler and the Rev. J. Roland Crandall. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

CLARK sustained back and chest injuries in a two-car collision on Cedar Creek bridge. He was a passenger in a car driven by Seth Harryman, 83, Fairfield. The second vehicle was driven by Ed Osweiler, 79, Sigourney.

The mishap occurred when Osweiler attempted to pass the Harryman car on the bridge. Both vehicles plunged into a deep ditch on the east side of the Highway.

Both drivers and Mrs. Ed Osweiler remain as patients at the Jefferson County hospital. Mrs. Frank Osweiler, also of Sigourney, was transferred today from the local hospital to the Keokuk County hospital at Sigourney. Frank Osweiler, also a passenger in the Osweiler car, was not injured.

A lifetime resident of Jefferson county, CLARK was born Oct. 29, 1875 near Fairfield, the son of Loren and Laura GREEN CLARK. He was married to Anna E. MESSER Nov. 18, 1919. She preceded him in death May 30, 1959. CLARK farmed in the Bethesda community for 40 years before moving to Fairfield nine years ago.

CLARK was a member of the Bethesda Methodist church. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John REGENMORTER, Muskegan, Mich.; two grandchildren; and one brother, Clarence M. CLARK, Portland, Ore. One sister and one brother are deceased.
