June CHIDESTER, Veteran Teacher, Succumbs At 79

Miss June CHIDESTER, veteran Jefferson county educator, died Sunday at 10:55 a.m. at the Crawford Nursing home, one day before her 80th birthday. She had been in failing health for six weeks.

Last rites will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Hoskins Funeral home in charge of Dr. S. P. Williamson. Burial wil be in Evergreen cemetery.

Miss CHIDESTER served as a teacher and educator in Jefferson county for 52 years prior to her retirement June 1, 1948. Her home was at 301 W. Washington St.

A lifetime resident of Jefferson county, Miss CHIDESTER was born May 27, 1877, the daughter of F. G. and Ellen WISECARVER CHIDESTER. She attended rural schools in the county and graduated from Fairfield high school in 1895. She also attended Parsons college and received her BA degree from Des Moines university.

Miss CHIDESTER began her career in January, 1896 when she was elected to teach sixth and seventh grades at old Franklin school. In 1911 she was named Jefferson county superintendent of schools, a post she filled for 25 years. She also served as a member of the State Board of Examiners from 1928 to 1932.

Miss CHIDESTER returned to the Fairfield public school system in 1937 upon her retirement as county superintendent. She was principal and eighth grade teacher at Washington school for eight years. From 1945 until her retirement she taught normal training subjects at Fairfield high school.

Miss CHIDESTER was a member of the First Christian church, PEO Chapter HA and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by three sisters: Mrs. John J. TEETER, Burlington; Mrs. J. C. FAIR, Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Mrs. Harry O. CROW, Fairfield.
