FUNERAL OF GEORGE H. CARSE WAS HELD THIS AFTERNOON

The funeral of George H. CARSE will be held at three o'clock this afternoon from the home of his sister, Mrs. Amy BARTLETT, Lowe street. The American Legion will have charge of the service and Dr. W. E. Parsons will deliver the address.

George H. CARSE, youngest son of John and Margaretta PARK CARSE was born on a farm near Pleasant Plain, Jefferson county, was educated in the country school and at the Academy, later going to Highland Park college, Des Moines, where he graduated from the Pharmacy department. He was in business in Winfield, Des Moines, and other places in Iowa until the war broke out, when he enlisted in the service of his country and was accepted at Des Moines, Iowa. He enlisted at Ft. Logan, Colorado, Nov. 20, 1917, and was sent to the M. O. T. C., Ft. Riley, Kansas, Nov. 26, 1917, was in Dental Infirmary of M. O. T. C. until March following, when he was transferred to Evacuation Hospital Nov. 15, having charge of the Dispensary(.) On June 13 they left Ft. Riley for Camp Lee, where they were subject to a more rigid training, before leaving for France, early in August, arriving at Verdun where they were prepared and gave first aid to the thousands of wounded victims of that historic place. After the signing of the armistice they spent the remainder of the time in France caring for the sick and suffering until they were sent home, arriving the first of July 1919, where from disease he contracted in the strenuous life of service, he was sent to the Military Hospital at Ft. Des Moines and later to Ft. Sheridan, Ill., where the end came, after 9 months of suffering, following an operation in the hopes that he might be restored to health.

Sgt. CARSE was a man of broad education, genial personality and had a great many friends, both in civil and military life, who besides his immediate family will learn with deep regrget (sic) of his passing, which occurred March 26.

CARSE

Geo. H. CARSE, formerly a resident of this county near Pleasant Plain, died at the military hospital at Ft. Sheridan last Friday. The body was brought to Fairfield for burial and funeral services were conducted at the home of his sister, Mrs. Amy BARTLETT.

Mr. CARSE served his country in the late war in this country and in France contracting disease when abroad which resulted in his death. He was a pharmacist and served in that capacity with the medical corps in the army.

Note: Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, IA, in Lot 2nd.184. He was married in Decatur Co., IA, in 1903 to Lillian M. WEBB. In 1934 she was living in Boise, ID. She died April 20, 1958, in Alameda, CA, and is buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, CA.
