OBITUARY

MRS. H. S. CARPENTER

Mrs. H. S. CARPENTER-- Maria Ann SPEAK--was born Oct. 13, 1839, at Peoria, Illinois, and died at her home in Fairfield, June 18, 1926, at the age of 86 years, 9 months, 5 days. She was the daughter of John and Julia SPEAK and came with them to Linn county, Ia., at the age of 1 year. She has been a resident of this state since that time.

Her father was one of Iowa's pioneer lawyers, and because of failing eye-sight, this daughter, for many years was his companion, reading law and assisting him in the court room. She thus gained a knowledge and interest in affairs which she retained throughout her life. Although confined to her bed for many years, she cast her vote at the last spring election. She followed the events in the newspapers eagerly, and on the eve of her death asked to have them read to her. She had always had a passion for reading and her unfailing memory was a marvel to all, and to the last she could recite much from her well stored mind.

At the age of fifteen she united with the Wesleyan Methodist church, and later, with the Free Methodist church, remaining a faithful member throughout life. As long as strength permitted she was active in the various departments, being especially interested in the care of the sick.

December 25, 1875 she was married to H. S. CARPENTER. They quietly celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Christmas Day 1925. To them were born three daughters, Lorena and Mrs. J. F. PENTZEL of this city and Mrs. Ralph BRADY of Ottumwa, who, with three grandchildren and the aged husband survive.

At the age of seventy-five she was stricken with disease and had been a constant but patient sufferer since. The past seven years she was confined to her bed.

During the long affliction her sense of humor never failed, and a visit to her sick-room was a delight.

Funeral services were held from the home, Sunday, June 20, at 4:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. L. Mendenhall, a life long friend, assisted by Rev. R. T. Fine. The text used, chosen by herself, was found in Zach. 14:7, "At Even-time, it shall be light." Three hymns, also of her own choosing, were sweetly sung by Mrs. Wilson King. The hymns were "There's a Land Far Away," "Sometime, We'll Understand," and "Nearer My God To Thee."

On a lovely June Sabbeth, at the setting of the sun, she was tenderly laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery, amid a profusion of blossoms. Her death like her life was glorious, and it could be truly said of her--"She approached the grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams."
