A WELL KNOWN RESIDENT DIES
James M. CANTERBURY, Who Was Past 80 Years, Will Be Buried Tomorrow

James M. CANTERBURY passed away last evening at 6:30 oclock at his home, 507 West Stone street after an illness of several months.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 oclock from the Christian church in charge of Rev. R. H. Polly. The body will be placed in the receiving vault until the ground permits interment.

Mr. CANTERBURY was born November 9, 1847 in Ohio and came here with his bride. They have lived in Fairfield and vicinity since. Mrs. CANTERBURY passed away February 13, 1923.

The following children survive, Mrs. Orville JOHNSON of this city, Mrs. Odie ABRAHAM of Ottumwa and Mrs. John BARE who with her husband, have been making their home with Mr. CANTERBURY since the death of his wife.

FUNERAL RITES HELD YESTERDAY
Rev. R. H. Polly In Charge of Services For James M. CANTERBURY

Funeral services for James M. CANTERBURY who passed away Monday evening at his home, 507 West Stone street, were held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 oclock from the Christian church in charge of Rev. R. H. Polly. Miss Mary Stever and Mrs. Norvell Switzer accompanied by Mrs. Albert JOHNSON sang the following songs, "Going Down the Valley," "Lead Kindly Light"' and "Going Home."

The men who served as pall bearers were, John BARE, Orville JOHNSON, Odie ABRAHAM, Lonnie Stone, and Theodore and Lester Crow. Interment was made in the receiving vault until weather will permit interment.

Mr. CANTERBURY was a charter member of Fairfield camp Modern Woodmen, having joined the society in 1888.

... --L. C. JOHNSON returned to his home in Shenandoah last evening after having been called here by the death of his grandfather, James M. CANTERBURY.

--Mr. and Mrs. L. D. ROBERTS and son Eugene left last night for their home in Chicago after having attended the funeral of James M. CANTERBURY.

--Odie ABRAHAM and son Carroll returned last night to Ottumwa. They were in attendance at the James M. CANTERBURY funeral services yesterday afternoon at the Christian church.

OBITUARY

JAMES M. CANTERBURY

James Monroe CANTERBURY son of Anderson W. and Ellen B. CANTERBURY, was born at Olive Furnace, Ohio, November 9, 1846 and departed this life at his home, 507 West Stone street, Fairfield, Iowa, April 18, 1927, at the age of 80 years, five months and nine days.

On December 12, 1867 at Scioto Furnace, Ohio, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth ARTH. They came to Jefferson county, Iowa, where they have since resided. He was preceded in death by his wife, February 13, 1923.

Six daughters were born to this union, two of whom died in infancy. Those who survive are: Mrs. Viola R. ROBERTS, Stewardsville, Mo., Mrs. Blanche ABRAHAM, Ottumwa, Iowa, Mrs. Rose BARE and Mrs. Anne M. JOHNSON, Fairfield, Iowa. He also leaves six grand children and five great grand children.

He was a veteran of the Civil War, Company I, 189 Regiment Ohio Infantry. He was a member of the George Strong Post G. A. R., the Modern Woodman (sic - Woodmen) of America and Court of Honor lodge. Several years ago he united with the Christian church and remained a consistent member until his death.

Funeral services were conducted from the church by his pastor Rev. R. H. Polly, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 oclock. Mrs. Norvell Switzer and Miss Mary Stever sang "I'm Going Home," "Going Down the Valley" and "Lead Kindly Light." The G. A. R. held their service at which time Mrs. Ben Leathers and Mrs. Charles O .Carter sang "Gathering Home." The pall bearers were: Orval JOHNSON, John BARE, Ottie ABRAHAM, Lonnie Stone Lester and Theodore Crow. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery.
