JEROME "JERRY" E. HEMRICH

Jerome "Jerry" E. HEMRICH, age 85 of Fairfield, IA passed away Sept. 11, 2020 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, IA (note: in Johnson Co., IA). A Celebration of Life service and inurnment in New Haven, IA will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established and can be mailed to Karin HEMRICH, 208 S. Court, #213, Fairfield, IA 52556.

Jerry was born on Dec. 14, 1934, to Bernard B. and Lorena (BLONIGAN) HEMRICH, at the family farm in New Haven, IA. He graduated from St. Mary's School in New Haven, IA and attended Loras College, in Dubuque, IA until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served two years in Frankfurt, Germany. On June 25, 1960 he was united in marriage to Karin JACOBI at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Newhall, IA. From this union came Carla, Diane, Callen and Dawn.

Jerry was an insurance agent for 27 years, spending the last 23 years with Mitchell County Farm Bureau in Osage, IA. He won several top salesman awards in his career. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, President of the Parish Council, on the Board of Education, and Youth Director at Sacred Heart Church, Osage, IA. He was also a member of the Cursillo Movement since the late 1960's (sic), Rotary Club, and both Iowa and National Life Underwriters Associations. Jerry was President of the Mitchell County Historical Society for 10 years and helped set up the Smolic Brothers Museum in Osage, IA called Cedar Valley Memories.

His life centered around faith, family, friends, community, career, and country. After retirement in 2000, he and Karin became full time RV'rs and enjoyed the next 5 years venturing from Florida to Alaska, and parts in between, before settling in Fairfield. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago White Sox fan. He was a teller of jokes, spinner of tales, and a stranger to no one.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Karin; his children, Carla (Terry) LONGERBEAM of Fairfield, Diane (Mike) RUGH of Snohomish, WA, Callen (Annette) HEMRICH of Brooklyn Park, MN and Dawn (Dusty) MacLENNAN of Mechanicsville, IA; 8 grandchildren, Jessica ANDERSON, J.J. LONGERBEAM, Bethany HEMRICH, Calianne (David) WELLS, Rachel (Bill) SCHNEIDER, Ben WITZ, Evelyn MacLENNAN and Tanner MILLS; 7 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dody (Bernie) ELWOOD of Crestview, FL and Mildred HATTEN of Haverhill, MA; a few cousins, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Lorena; sisters, Kay, Adeline, and Mary Lou; brothers, Joe, Everett and Ronny; and grandson, Kyle.
