Page 3, Column 5A Sad Announcement.
The telegraph brought a message from Omaha, Neb., yesterday afternoon that Mrs. Joel E. CAMPBELL had died in that city. There were no further particulars. Mrs. CAMPBELL went to Omaha Sunday night, accompanying the wife of her son, Dr. S. M. CAMPBELL, who was in ill health, and was expected home last evening. The announcement came as a great shock to relatives and friends in this city. It is expected that the remains will be brought here this evening, J. M. WHITHAM having gone to Omaha on the sad errand, but no hour for the funeral can yet be announced.
Anna E. CRAWFORD was born near Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1831, where she grew to womanhood. She was married to Joel E. CAMPBELL while at school at Washington, Penn., in 1848. The young people came to this city in 1849, and have resided in this vicinity since that time. For a number of years Mr. CAMPBELL was in business in this city, but for about twenty years the family has resided on a farm in Fairfield township, three miles north of town. Three children survived the mother, Dr. S. M. CAMPBELL of Omaha, Neb., Dr. Eugene CAMPBELL of Los Angeles, Cal., and Mrs. J. M. WHITHAM of this city. Deceased was a sister of Mrs. M. J. FARMER and Jas F. CRAWFORD, now the sole surviving members of their family. Mrs. CAMPBELL through all her life has been a delicate woman, and when she left here the first of the week was in better health than for many years. She was a woman of refinement and intelligence and throughout all the years she had spent in this community she had retained any warm friendships. As wife and mother, as neighbor and friend she will be sadly missed in the community.

Word was received in this city Tuesday afternoon of the death of Mrs. Joel E. CAMPBELL at Omaha, Nebraska, that morning. Mrs. CAMPBELL was in her usual health when she left for that city Sunday evening in company with her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Samuel CAMPBELL. The news of her death was a sad surprise to her friends. While no word has been received here from her relatives as to the cause of her death, a telegram in to-day's Chicago "Tribune" says she was killed by falling backwards from a moving motor car. Mr. J. M. WHITHAM went to Omaha Tuesday evening, and a telegram from him this morning states that he will return with the remains at eight o'clock to-night.
Anna Eliza CRAWFORD was born in Steubenville, Ohio, in 1831. She was married to Joel E. CAMPBELL April 13, 1848, in Washington, Pennsylvania. Mr. CAMPBELL came to this city in 1848 and established a general store on the present site of the First National Bank. In 1850 he returned to Pennsylvania and brought his family to this city. Here they made their home until the year 1875 when they moved on a farm north of town which has been their home ever since. Mrs. CAMPBELL was the mother of six children, three of whom are still living. They are Mrs. J. M. WHITHAM, of this city; Samuel, of Omaha, at whose home she died, and Eugene, of California. W. P. CAMPBELL, the oldest son, died last year in Las Vegas, N. M., and his widow and three daughters now reside in Fairfield. Two other children, boys, died in early life, one in infancy and one when about a year old.
Mrs. CAMPBELL was an excellent woman, a devoted wife and a most tender mother. Her life has been a quiet and gentle one, and every duty has been performed with conscientious care and loving goodness.

Page 3, Column 5Her Death was Accidental.
In last week's Ledger the death of Mrs. Joel E. CAMPBELL at Omaha, Neb., the 17th inst., was briefly noted. The telegrams which had conveyed the sad intelligence to friends in this city did not state the reason of death, but later advices state that it was accidental. Mrs. CAMPBELL, accompanied by a member of the family, had gone to the railway station to start home, but missed the train by a few minutes. She insisted that she could easily make the return journey to her son's residence alone, and boarded an electric car for that purpose. The car did not stop promptly when she had reached her destination and she undertook to get off while it was in motion. She was thrown violently to the ground, alighting on her head, and death resulted instantly from dislocation of the neck. The accident occurred within a few doors of the home of her son, Dr. S. M. CAMPBELL. The conductor states that he endeavored to catch the unfortunate woman as she left the car, but was unable to do so, and persons who witnessed the accident say that those in charge of the car were in no way responsible for the sad affair. The remains were brought to this city for interment, and were laid in the grave Friday. Funeral services were held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. WHITHAM, conducted by Rev. M. L. Melick of the Lutheran church. A great many people who had known and loved this excellent woman united with the family in paying a last sad tribute to her memory.
