Brighton man, 32, dies in farm mishap

BRIGHTON -- DeWayne Jacob BURGER, 32, rural Brighton, was killed Monday night in a farm equipment accident.

The Washington County Sheriff's Department, Brighton Quick Responders and Washington County Ambulance Service responded to the accident at 7:08 p.m. Monday approximately three miles northwest of Brighton.

A sheriff's office spokeswoman said BURGER became entangled in power equipment while unloading corn from a gravity box to a free-standing auger. The spokeswoman said BURGER's clothing was caught in a power takeoff shaft.

Dr. Donald Miller, acting Washington County medical examiner, pronounced BURGER dead at the scene as a result of multiple injuries.

BURGER was employed as a farmhand at the Donnie B. Dickinson farms. He was born Jan. 20, 1954, in Washington, the son of Howard Jacob and Anna Mae Kathryn REBLING BURGER. He married Linda Joyce ROLAND on Oct. 6, 1979.

In addition to his parents and his wife, BURGER is survived by one son, Steve WINSLOW; two sisters, Colleen BATES and Betty RUSSELL, both of Fairfield; and grandparents Harold and Mildred REBLING of rural Brighton.

The service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hope Lutheran Church in Germanville with the Rev. Robert Barker officiating. Family visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Behner Funeral Home.

Memorials may be left to Hope Lutheran Luther League for Youth Ministry.

In memory of DeWayne BURGER.

There are few people in life you can call a friend, but DeWayne was a friend to so many people.
