Refa M. TEAL GAINES BURCH

Refa M. TEAL GAINES BURCH, 89, of 305 S. Court St., died at 11:45 p.m. Sunday, April 15, 2001, at the Jefferson County Hospital.

The body has been donated to medical research at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City (note: in Johnson Co., IA).

No services are scheduled at this time.

Raymond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. BURCH was born March 20, 1912, in Stockport, the daughter of Frank Thomas and Dana BEAN TEAL. She married Louis GAINES in 1955. He died November 1960. She married Elmer H. BURCH Dec. 9, 1972, in Memphis, Mo. He died June 5, 1991.

She grew up on a farm near Stockport and attended Stockport schools through her junior year of high school, graduating from Keosauqua High School. She worked as deputy county recorder and also worked in the office of attorneys McBeth and Stong. Later she was deputy superintendent of schools and worked for the soil conservation service. During World War II from 1943-45 she worked as a court reporter. After her first marriage, she and her husband owned and operated Louie's Trading Post on the east side of the Fairfield square. Following his death, she continued to operate the sporting good store. She owned the store for a total of 10 years.

She was a member of the Methodist Church, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and of the auxiliaries. She was also past worthy priestess of the White Shrine and a member of Eastern Star.

Survivors include a cousin and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; three brothers, Norwood, Marvin and Lyle TEAL; and one sister, Naomi ANDERSON.

Note: Buried in Lot 4th.009 with first husband Louis. She has a military footstone under the BURCH surname, and a civilian headstone under the GAINES surname. Second husband Elmer is buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, Van Buren Co., IA.
