Man Suffers Fatal BurnsVernon A. BRYANT, 77, well known vegetable gardener in Jefferson County, died of burns late Monday afternoon while he was burning off his truck garden.
The BRYANT farm home is located on Route 4 about 5½ miles northwest of Fairfield.
County officials said they were notified of BRYANT's death at 5:36 p.m. They said when they arrived at the farm home his body was located some distance from the area he was burning off.
It is believed his clothing caught fire. He had attempted to put out the flames but failed.
Officers said they were told he went outside to burn off the garden around 3 p.m. When he failed to return to the house about dark his wife went to locate him but failed. She summoned neighbors.
After a short search he was found by Harold Hadley and Keith Shafer who has responded to Mrs. BRYANT's call. County officials ruled BRYANT's death was accidental.
Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Bartruff officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Vernon A. BRYANT, 77, was born Jan. 16, 1900, in Waukegan, Ill., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry BRYANT. He was reared and educated in Thorndale, Texas, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1916 to 1923.
His marriage to Florence J. SCHAIBLE took place April 20, 1935, in Troy, N.Y.
They lived in New York City until 1958 when they moved from the big city to a farm in Jefferson County near Fairfield.
A man who always enjoyed gardening, he started his truck gardening on a half-acre patch. It continued to grow until this year when it covered more than eight acres. Most of his produce was sold at the farm.
He is survived by his widow. BRYANT was a member of the United Methodist Church.
