Zell BROWN, Jr. Dies Suddenly Near His Home

Zell BROWN Jr. 66, native of the Fairfield Community, died suddenly about 4 p.m. Sunday near his home one-half mile southeast of Fairfield.

Reports said he had been burning dry grass and weeds along the road and had returned to his truck where he slumped over the wheel. His death was apparently caused by a heart attack. He was pronounced dead by Dr. Kirk Strong, acting medical examiner who was called to the scene.

At the time of his death BROWN was serving as County Weed Commissioner and bailiff of the Jefferson County District Court.

Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Weston Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Hoyt L. Whitebread officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Zell BROWN was born May 7, 1902, in Fairfield, the son of A. W and Margaret GOSSICK BROWN. He was married to Enid SWANSON on June 15, 1931. He was a member of the First Christian Church, a former member of the National Guard, a member of the Elks Lodge and VFW.

He graduated from the Fairfield High School in 1922. He was a star athlete in both football and basketball, and attended Parsons College where he continued his athletic career.

He was a merchant and butcher for over 20 years and in more recent years was engaged in the livestock business.

Survivors include his wife, one brother, Ralph M. BROWN and a sister, Mrs. Maude SMITH, both of Fairfield. He was preceded in death by one brother and a sister.
