End Came at 9 Oclock Sunday Night, Three Hours After Taken to HospitalZell BROWN, one of the most widely known business men in Fairfield, and almost the oldest one in point of continuous activity, died Sunday night at 9 oclock at the Jefferson County hospital three hours after being taken there and six hours after he became suddenly ill at his home, 403 South Court street.
Funeral services will be held at the Christian church Thursday afternoon at 2.30 oclock and will be conducted by the pastor, Rev. R. H. Polly. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Ashael (sic - Asahel) W. BROWN was born in Birmingham, August 30, 1864. He went to the local schools and finished his education at Brush college near Birmingham. He early went into the cattle business, being employed by Moss Brothers, large dealers in Birmingham. Forty-five years ago February 1 next, he came to Fairfield and found employment and had been continuously active in business ever since. He was employed for some time by R. D. DuBois and then he and B. F. Crail bought out the business and were associated together for more than a quarter of a century. Mr. BROWN only about a year ago buying out Mr. Crail, who retired.
Mr. BROWN married Miss Margaret GOSSICK August 13, 1884, and she and four children survive--Mrs. W. C. SMITH, Mrs. Armour M. WILLSON, Ralph M. BROWN and Zell BROWN Jr. Another son, J. W. BROWN, died in 1919. He leaves the following brothers and sisters--D. W. BROWN of New London; Mrs. Marry NORRIS of Hastings, Nebr.; Mrs. Sudie ANDERSON of Lodi, Calif.; Mrs. Priscilla BRYANT of Vermillion, S. D.; and Mrs. Sadie CREATH of Glendale, Calif. Mrs. Eugene HAGBERG of Springfield, Ill., is a granddaughter.
Mr. BROWN had one hobby that revealed a delightful side of his nature. He was passionately fond of flowers and grew them with enthusiasm. He was one of the originators of the flower show here and always exhibited. He had one of the finest displays at the show at the First Methodist church last fall.
He was a long time member of the Christian church, but never sought public office, and cared little for public acclaim.
