Frank M. BOYD of this city died in the Ottumwa hospital Friday night at 11:30 from injuries received at 3:30 in the afternoon. He was a workman with the bridge force of the C., B. & Q. Railroad company which is employed on the new bridge over Skunk river at Rome. While engaged in his work a heavy sledge hammer fell from the top of the structure, striking him on the back of the head and fracturing his skull. Surgeons were dispatched from Mt. Pleasant at once, but the unfortunate man's condition was so serious that they recommended his immediate removal to a hospital. Fred. Ellers, superintendent of bridges, immediately secured a special train and a speedy run was made to Ottumwa. An operation was at once performed by Drs. Spillman, Williams and Houck, but the patient was past all aid. He died without recovering consciousness.
Deceased was the eldest son of the late Andrew J. BOYD. He was born in this city March 14th, 1870, and grew to manhood here. He was married to Grace DOWNEY, who, with one child, survives him. He had been in the employ of the C., B. & Q. company about a year, and was a most efficient man and trusted employe. Mr. BOYD had a great many friends among his fellows and more than a hundred of them attended his funeral. So many railroad men never before attended a funeral in this city. The company ran a special train from Mt. Pleasant to Fairfield for the services. Fellow workmen at Rome attested the esteem in which they held their dead comrade by the gift of many beautiful flowers. Funeral services were held at the home of the young man's mother, Mrs. Mary M. BOYD, Monday afternoon, and were conducted by Rev. W. J. Funkey. The remains were interred in the Evergreen cemetery.
