BOWERMASTER, 94, Retired Barber, Taken In Death

H. C. "Buck" BOWERMASTER, one of Fairfield's oldest businessmen both from the standpoint of age and length of service, died at 5:45 p.m. Saturday at the Jefferson County Hospital.

The longtime barber closed his shop and retired in September, 1968, after being in business 67 years. He was 90 years old at that time, and 94 at the time of his death.

Last rites will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilson Hyde officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

A native of Jefferson County, BOWERMASTER began work as an apprentice barber Jan. 7, 1901. A year later he entered into a partnership with Walt Wilson and the shop was located in the Fairfield Opera House on North Main. The building was destroyed by fire in 1909.

After working in several other shops, BOWERMASTER moved to his location on the northwest corner of the square in 1926. He remained at that location until he retired 42 years later. The shop was located in the basement under the Fairfield News Center.

Since his retirement he had remained at his apartment at 111½ W. Broadway. He entered the Jefferson County Hospital Jan. 19 after a fall at his home.

Henry Claude "Buck" BOWERMASTER, 94, was born Dec. 15, 1877 on a farm north of Fairfield, the son of John and Margaret GOW BOWERMASTER. He was married to Grace HARPER in 1905, and she died in 1915.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, lifetime member of B.P.O. Elks 1992, and a charter member of Eagles Lodge 1927 (sic - Aerie or Club).

Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy BOWERMASTER, Fairfield; a foster sister, Mrs. Preston WELLS, Geneseo, Ill.; one step sister, Mrs. R. T. STEWART, Detroit; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, four brothers and one sister.
