Front Page, Columns 1, 2, and 3Fairfield New Year's holiday is marred by tragic death
A tragic death Monday night marred what otherwise was a quiet New Year holiday in the Fairfield community.
Jack BLOUGH, 62, a longtime member of the Iowa National Guard and a veteran of World War II, died suddently (sic) at 11:15 p.m. Monday while chasing a suspect who he believed had stolen his pickup truck.
Police said they received a call from BLOUGH at 11 p.m. stating that someone had stolen his pickup truck which had been parked near his home at 206 E. Hempstead.
At 11:12 p.m. police said they received a call from the Jefferson County Ambulance Service stating they needed assistance at the intersection of C and Hempstead.
It was learned that a neighbor had called BLOUGH minutes before and told him they had seen someone drive away in his pickup truck which had been parked near BLOUGH's home.
BLOUGH put on his coat and went outside just as the driver was parking the truck nearby. He had apparently driven it only a short distance and was returning it.
As the driver got out of the truck he started running and BLOUGH gave chase. He fell at the intersection after running a short distance, and died of an apparent heart attack.
(Note: The remainder of this article deals with another incident, and so is omitted.)
