J. C. BLACKFORD DIES FRIDAY
Former resident well known as mail carrier; active in church

John C. BLACKFORD, 78, former Fairfield resident, city mail carrier and member of the city council, passed away at 11 p.m. Friday night in a Des Moines hospital after several weeks of illness during which he suffered a stroke (note: in Polk Co., IA).

He was born Sept. 13, 1860 in Edwardsville, Ill. He lived as a youth in St. Louis, Mo., however, and attended school in that city. Also in St. Louis he taught in a business college. Later he moved to a farm near Fairfield where he remained for a short while.

Afterwards he became a clerk with the grocery firm of Huffman and Herring and held this position for two years.

On Feb. 13, 1893 he became a clerk at the post office which was then located where the American Railway Express office is now. In 1897 the city delivery system was established and on Sept. 1 of that year he was transferred from clerk to carrier. He served as carrier until his retirement Sept. 12, 1925 -- a period of 28 years.

He was active in postal organizations and at one time was secretary of the local letter carriers club. He was also a member of the city council and a member of the Methodist church. He was trustee and financial secretary of the church for many years and was very active in the Brotherhood Bible class. He was a Mason.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. G. E. LOFGREN and Mrs. Fred ELAND, both of Mediapolis; a son, Albert C. BLACKFORD of Minneapolis, Minn., a brother, W. W. BLACKFORD of Omaha, Nebr., and by 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist church in charge of Dr. M. A. Gable and the Rev. G. W. Poole. The body was brought from Des Moines to Hoskins funeral home in Fairfield this morning and Monday morning will be taken from Hoskins to the family residence. Interment is to be in Evergreen cemetery.
