MRS. MARY BLACK DIED HERE TODAY
At the Age of 83 Years; Funeral Services Sunday Afternoon at 4

Mrs. Mary Steel BLACK age 83 and a life long resident of this city, passed away this morning about 8 oclock at her home over 50 East Burlington street after being ill health for the past six months.

The last rites will be held Sunday afternoon at 4 oclcock (sic) from the Hoskins funeral home in charge of Dr. Gilbert Voorhies. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Mrs. BLACK was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard GAINES and was born in this city Feb. 17, 1846. she was married to F. J. L. BLACK Dec. 21, 1969 (sic - 1869), in this city. He passed away here in July, 1919. to this union was born a daughter, Mrs. Harry E. SMITH, who survives. She also leaves the following nieces and nephews: Miss Nellie KIRKPATRICK of this city, who has assisted in her care during her long illness, Mrs. M. F. BLACK of Creston, John KIRKPATRICK of Battle Creek, Mich., L. O. GAINES of this city and F. D. GAINES of Los Angeles, Calif.

Mrs. BLACK was a member of the Congregational church and as long as health permitted was always prominently identified with the better interest of the city.

MRS. MARY BLACK RITES TOMORROW
Services for Life Long Fairfield Resident Will Be Held at 4 Oclock

The last rites for Mrs. Mary Steel BLACK, who passed away yesterday morning, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 oclock from the Hoskins funeral home in charge of Dr. Gilbert Voorhies of the Presbyterian church. Burial will take place in Evergreen cemetery.

Mrs. BLACK, who has been ill for the past six months at her home over 50 East Burlington street, died at 8 oclock yesterday morning. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard GAINES and she was born in this city Feb. 17, 1846. Her entire life has been spent here. She was married to F. J. L. BLACK, a prominent business man here, Dec. 21, 1869. He preceded her in death in July, 1919. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Harry E. SMITH of this city, and a foster son, Lyle F. BLACK, of Long Beach, Calif., who became one of the family when about four years of age. She also leaves two nieces and three nephews; Miss Nellie KIRKPATRICK of this city, who has helped to care for her during her long illness, Mrs. M. F. BLACK of Creston, John KIRKPATRICK of Battle Creek, Mich., L. O. GAINES of this city and F. D. GAINES of Los Angeles, Calif.

MRS. M. BLACK RITES YESTERDAY
Were Held from the Hoskins Funeral Home at 4; Dr. Voorhies Officiated

Many relatives and friends paid their last respects to the memory of Mrs. Mary S. BLACK, pioneer resident of this city, at the impressive funeral services held at the Hoskins funeral home at 4 oclock yesterday afternoon. Dr. Gilbert Voorhies of the Presbyterian church was the officiating minister.

Mrs. L. W. Van Nostrand and Mrs. James H. Montgomery sang the songs, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Going Down the Valley' with Mrs. Gilbert Voorhies at the piano. The casket attendants were--Floyd GAINES, Richard GAINES, John Ward, E. R. Smith, Booker Smith and Russell Smith, Jr.. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery. Many beautiful floral offerings silently testified to the esteem in which this well known woman was held.
