Boy Hurt In Gun Mishap

Perry BELL, 14, was undergoing emergency surgery at 1:30 p.m. today as result of an accidental gunshot wound in the abdomen which took place shortly before noon.

BELL is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen BELL, Route 3, Fairfield.

Police said the shooting took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Smith, 907 S. Fourth. Officers said they were told Doug Smith, 14 was showing his dad's shotgun to his friend when the gun went off.

Fred Robinson was doing some plumbing work at the home next door. He said young Smith ran to him for help, stating his friend had been shot. Robinson notified officers and called the ambulance.

The shooting was still under investigation at 1:30 p.m., but officers ruled it as accidental. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are on vacation but had been notified of the accident by long distance telephone.

Gun Accident Fatal To Fairfield Youth

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning for Perry Glen BELL, 14-year-old Fairfield youth who died Monday afternoon of an accidental gunshot wound.

BELL was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen BELL, Fairfield Route 3. He died at 3 p.m.. following emergency surgery at the Jefferson County Hospital.

Last rites will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne L. Bartruff officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Arrangements are in charge of the Behner Funeral Home. Visitation will be held there tonight from 7:30 to 8:30.

The tragic accident occurred Monday shortly before noon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Smith, 907 S. Fourth Street. The Smith's son, Doug, 14, and BELL were examining a .20-gauge shotgun when the gun discharged, striking BELL in the abdomen.

Young Smith ran next door where Fred Robinson was doing plumbing work and asked him for help. Robinson called the ambulance and summoned officers.

The BELL youth was able to walk out of the house and officers found him in the front yard when they arrived. Officers said the Smith youth told them the gun had not been out of its case since last fall.

BELL was born Nov. 4, 1962 in Fairfield, the son of Glen and Marily (sic) SASSEEN BELL. He would have been a ninth grace student this fall. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Tammy, at home, and the following grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. Frank BELL and Mr. and Mrs. Housten SASSEEN, all of Fairfield.
