IOWA CITY

Hazel S. BATES, 81, of Bon Aire, died Tuesday, March 14, 1995, in Mercy Hospital following heart surgery. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City, by the Rev. Richard Poster. Burial: 1 p.m. Friday, Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, by the Rev. William Sullivan. Friends may call from 5 to 8 tonight at George L. Gay Funeral Home, where a wake service begins at 7 p.m.

Survivors include three sisters, Bertha HOSEK of St. Paul, Minn., Mabel SCHONAUER of Iowa City and Maurine HABERMAN of Kalona; and two brothers, Leon NOSBISH of West Branch and Jerry NOSBISH of Cedar Rapids.

Also surviving are 18 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Alfred and Ralph; and her parents.

Born April 4, 1913, in Alta Vista, the daughter of Nick and Susan HENTGES NOSBISH, she married Maurice D. BATES on Jan. 27, 1934. They owned a jewelry store in Ames for 35 years. Following retirement they moved to Hot Springs Village, Ark., where they lived for many years. Hazel moved to Iowa City in 1990 after her husband's death. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
