Carl H. BATES, life-time resident of Jefferson county, died about 7:50 a.m. today at his home, 402 E. Broadway. His death was caused by a heart attack.
Last rites will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church with the Rev. J. Roland Crandall officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The body will be taken from the Raymond funeral home to the church at 12:30 p.m. the day of the service.
A member of the Methodist church, BATES was a retired farmer and a member of the Masonic lodge. He had lived in Jefferson county all his life and in Fairfield the past ten years.
Carl H. BATES, 71, was born July 21, 1891, in Buchanan township, the son of Perry O. and Bertha WELKER BATES. He was reared and educated in the Prairie Chapel and Fairfield schools and attended the Burlington Business college.
He was married March 18, 1915, to Ethel ALLANDER (sic - ALLENDER). The wedding took place at the home of the bride northeast of Fairfield.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two brothers, Vernon BATES, Fairfield, and Charles BATES, Manteca, Calif.; also two sisters, Mrs. B. R. LOOFBOURROW, Hollister, Calif., and Mrs. Vera HOOVER, Fairfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

ALLENDER Sr., Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. James O'Meara and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Marinich of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Nihard, Sister Mary Jeanine, Sister Mary Clare, Mrs. Myles Bradford and son, Carman, all from Ottumwa.
