KILLS SELF WITH GUN
James BARTLETT, Despondent on Account of Ill Health Commits Suicide.

This morning at 6:15 o'clock, James BARTLETT committed suicide at his home on East Lowe street by shooting himself in the breast with a shot gun.

Mr. BARTLETT who has been in very poor health for several weeks arose early this morning, between four and five o'clock, and began working in the garden. About 6:15 o'clock, Mrs. BARTLETT heard the report of a shot gun, coming from the wood shed.

Neighbors were called and Mr. BARTLETT was found lying on the floor of the wood shed. A single barreled shot gun was found lying near him. The stock of the gun had evidently been placed against the side of the shed and the muzzle against his breast, the charge of shot entering the heart and causing instant death.

Coroner Dr. C. C. Tallman and Sheriff Shan Campbell were at once called, and it was found that no inquest would be necessary.

Mr. BARTLETT, who has conducted a barber shop here for a number of years, at the time of his death being located in the room under the Iowa State Savings bank, was born east of Fairfield, on August 21st, 1856, and leaves a wife and three sons, Shirley C. of Wyman, John Milford aged 13, and Robert L. aged 9, at home. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. L. R. BENTON of Estherville, and one brother Arthur BARTLETT Sr., of Ottumwa whose son is court reporter at the present term of court here.

No funeral arrangements have as yet been made, awaiting the arrival of relatives.

JAMES BARTLETT KILLS SELF WITH SHOT GUN

Proprietor of Barber Shop Killed Self in Wood Shed Early Tuesday Morning

AFFLICTED WITH PERIODS OF MELANCHOLIA.

Had Been in Poor Health For Some Time and Worried About It

James BARTLETT shot and killed himself in the wood shed at his residence on East Lowe street shortly after six o'clock Tuesday morning. The shot gun which was used to commit the act was placed with the muzzle against his breast and the shot penetrated the heart, causing immediate death. Melancholia of a hypochondriacal nature is thought to have been the reason for the suicide.

Mr. BARTLETT has arisen early and had spent some time working in the garden. Shortly after six o'clock Mrs. BARTLETT heart the report of the gun and calling the neighbors entered the woodshed and found him lying on the floor dead, the shot gun by his side. Coroner C. C. Tallman and Sheriff Campbell were called but it was so plainly evident that the case was one of suicide that an inquest was thought unnecessary.

It is said that Mr. BARTLETT has at different times suffered periods of melancholia on account of poor health and this is thought to have been the instigator of the deed.

Mr. BARTLETT was born in August, 1756 (sic - 1856), and has for a number of years conducted a barber shop in this city. He is survived by his wife and three sons, Shirley of Wyman and John and Robert at home. A brother, Arthur, of Ottumwa and a sister, Mrs. L. R. BENTON, of Estherville also survive him.

The funeral services will be held from the home at 2:30 this afternoon conducted by Dr. W. E. Parsons. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery.
