Fairfield Man Ended Own Life, Coroner Rules

FAIRFIELD -- The body of 50-year-old Kenneth BARNETT was found hanging in the garage of his home at 507 North B street about 6 p.m. Monday.

Coroner Jack Raymond said the man had taken his own life, but admitted there was no known reason for the act.

According to Raymond, BARNETT, who had been yard foreman at Fairfield Lumber company 34 years, customarily got off work at five o'clock and went to the Spurgeon store, where his wife is employed, to escort her home. Mrs. BARNETT gets off work at 5:30. When he did not appear at the store Monday, Mrs. BARNETT called the lumber yard, and was informed that her husband had not reported for work in the afternoon. She went home and found his body. Raymond, Sheriff James Griffitts and members of the Fairfield fire department were summoned and attempted to revive BARNETT, but without success.

The coroner said BARNETT apparently left no note of explanation for his deed.

A native of Kewanee, Ill., BARNETT was born Aug. 15, 1906, the son of Oscar and Bertha GOULD BARNETT. He had been a resident of Fairfield since boyhood. He was married to Mildred PARSONS at Salina on Feb. 22, 1928. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Besides his wife, BARNETT is survived by a son and two daughters: Keith BARNETT at home; Mrs. Arnold MORRISON, Culver City, Calif., and Mrs. Robert NELSON, of Fairfield. Seven brothers and two sisters also survive: Harley and Ronald BARNETT, both of Moline, Ill.; Lester BARNETT, Garden Grove, Calif.; Chester BARNETT, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Harold BARNETT, San Clements, Calif.; Paul BARNETT, Stillwell, Ill.; Russell BARNETT, Fairfield; Mrs. Virginia PIPER, Fremont, and Mrs. Betty KEEFE, of Waterloo.

The body is at the Weston Behner funeral home.
