LIFE OF MARY E. BARNES

Mary E. WILSON was born near Mt. Pleasant, Henry county, Iowa, April 19, 1835, and died here November 30, 1918, aged 83 years seven months and eleven days.

She came to Fairfield with her parents when a girl nine years of age and since that time had made this her home.

She was united in marriage to Benjamin BARNES, September 11, 1859, with whom she lived 52 years. He passed away October 17th, 1911 (sic - October 15th, 1912).

She had been closely associated with some of the oldest families of the city. J. N. Poulton, father of Mrs. B. F. Crail had been taken into the home of her parents when an orphan boy and made one of the family. Mrs. J. W. Castle had made her home with Mrs. BARNES before she was married and the families have always been closely associated. R. D. Du Bois, one of the pall bearers, had been in school with her 70 years ago. Thus we might go on showing her intimate relation to the community. However, nowhere will she be more greatly missed than in the Methodist Epicopal (sic) church where she had been a life-long member, associated as she had been with the Missionary society, class meeting and her constant attendance at church when able. She was a lovely Christian character, beloved by all who knew her. We can only say of her as it was said of one in the olden times, "She is not for God hath taken her."

Aside from the large circle of friends she leaves a number of relatives, the following of which were present at the funeral: Mrs. Sarah BEATTY and son Harry, Dr. Nina DEWING, of Des Moines; Mrs. George MORRIS, Des Moines; Miss Nota ABBE, Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Allie MATHEWS, Denver, and Charles POULTON, of Ottumwa.
