Arthur BAKER, Phone Manager, Dies Suddenly

Arthur L. BAKER, Fairfield telephone manager, died suddenly at 12:30 p.m. today after suffering a heart attack in the office of Dr. K. G. Cook.

An emergency call was placed for the fire department resuscitator but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

BAKER, 52, reported for work as usual this morning. He complained of feeling ill and went to the doctor's office where he was stricken a short time later.

The body is at the Raymond funeral home where last rites are pending.

A native of Fairfield, BAKER has been associated with the local telephone company since 1926. He succeeded F. H. McQuiston as Fairfield manager for the United Telephone Co. of Iowa Oct. 1, 1954.

BAKER was also a long-time member of the Fairfield Fire Department. He joined the department May 1, 1929 and was assistant chief when he retired Dec. 31, 1956.

BAKER is survived by his wife, Esther; his mother, Mrs. Carrie BAKER, Fairfield; and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Lillian ZEIGLER, Portland, Ore.; Frank BAKER, Peoria, Ill.; Mrs. J. E. DAGGETT, William R. BAKER and George BAKER, all of Fairfield.

Last Rites For Arthur L. BAKER Planned Tuesday

Funeral services for Arthur L. BAKER, 52, Fairfield telephone company manager, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist church.

BAKER died suddenly Friday afternoon after suffering a heart attack. Last rites will be conducted by Dr. J. Henry Teele with burial in Evergreen cemetery. The body will be taken from the Raymond funeral home to the church at 12:45 p.m.

BAKER was born April 15, 1907 in Jefferson county, the son of William Ray and Carrie LOEHR BAKER. He was married to Esther GATTIS June 11, 1945.

BAKER had been associated with the local telephone company since 1926. He was named Fairfield manager for the United Telephone co. of Iowa Oct. 1, 1954.

A long-time member of the Fairfield Fire Department, he served with that organization for 27 years. He joined the department May 1, 1929 and was assistant chief when he retired Dec. 31, 1956.

BAKER was a member of the First Methodist church. He was a past president of the Eagles Lodge (sic - Aerie/Club) a member of the rotary club, Chamber of Commerce, Fairfield Country club, and an honorary member of the Fire Department.

BAKER was a veteran of World War II and a former member of the National Guard band. He was also a member of the Pioneer Telephone Association and a district officer of the Circus Fans Association of America. He formerly served on the city planning commission.

Surviving are his wife and his mother, Mrs. Carrie BAKER, Fairfield; and the following brothers and sisters:

Mrs. Lillian ZEIGLER, Portland, Ore.; Frank BAKER, Galesburg, Ill.; Mrs. J. E. DAGGETT, William R. BAKER and George BAKER, all of Fairfield.

Note: Buried in Lot 2nd.167. Wife Esther subsequently married Benjamin PUCKETT, died in a car accident in TX and is buried there even though she shares Arthur's gravestone complete with her birth and death dates.
