Edward E. AXTHELM, 94, formerly of Fairfield, died at 11 p.m. Monday at Parkview Garden Care Center in Waterloo (note: in Blackhawk Co., IA).
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. James W. ANGELL and the Rev. Carl Riggs officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to First Presbyterian Church.
AXTHELM was born Jan. 10, 1892 on a farm southwest of Harper in Keokuk County, the son of Oscar F. and Mary G. GOELDNER AXTHELM. He attended rural and public schools in Keokuk County and graduated from Iowa State University with a BS degree in mechanical engineering and an MS degree in vocational education.
He served for 18 years as an athletic director and administrator in Iowa high schools and was a prominent athletic official for 25 years at Iowa high school athletic contests. During World War II, he was an instructor in the Naval training program at Iowa State University, and after the war, worked in the engineering department of Louden Machinery Company until retiring in 1961.
He was active in Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity for 60 years, serving as district governor of the Iowa-Nebraska district for 16 years. He was a charter member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter at ISU, and was a counselor and advisor to the Parsons College chapter.
Active in Fairfield projects, he was treasurer of the Jefferson County Republican Central Committee, county heart chairman, director of the state heart association, a Mason, Lion, charter member of Keep Young Club, lifetime member of the Elks, a member of the Presbyterian church, having served as elder. He received the Outstanding Citizen of the Year award in 1961 from the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce.
He married Cora May MILLAR Nov. 29, 1917, at Madison, Ind. She died Sept. 6, 1981. A son, David, was killed in a jet crash during the Korean War (sic - Korean Conflict). A granddaughter also preceded him in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Virginia ANGELL of Claremont, Calif., Frieda YAKISH of Waterloo; a son, Robert E. of El Cajon, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; four great grandsons; a brother, Oscar F. of Huntington Beach, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.
