OLD SOLDIER IS DEAD TODAY
J. T. AXLINE Passed Away This Morning After Long Illness

John T. AXLINE for sixty-five years a resident of Jefferson County passed away early this morning a the Jefferson county hospital after a lingering illness. Although Mr. AXLINE has been in poor health for several years and often during this time has been confined to his bed, his condition during his last seige (sic) did not become serious until a few days ago. He was taken to the hospital Thursday, where death came about three oclock this morning at the result of stomach disorders and other diseases.

Mr. AXLINE was perhaps one of the best known of Fairfield residents. He came to Jefferson county as a boy, married a Jefferson county girl, he became a prominent teacher in the schools here and made the city his home for the remainder of his life. Although a continual sufferer from ill health, Mr. AXLINE was very active and until recently was often seen about the city.

He was born in Jessamine county, Kentucky, September 6, 1846, being at the time of his death seventy-five years, eleven months and six days old. In 1865, he came to Jefferson county where he has since lived.

Mr. AXLINE received his education in Fairfield at what was known as Fairfield college. Following his work there he took up school teaching and became one of the country's most efficient teachers. He was always interested in church work, being one of the founders of the Lutheran church here and a most active worker in that organization.

In 1877, he was married to Miss Laura J. WHITSON, a resident of this county, who passed away many years ago. Later he married Miss Anna LEWIS, who with a son S. E. AXLINE of Denver, Colorado and a brother Andrew of Bethany, Missouri survive him.

During the Civil war he served his country, being one of the early members of Grand Army of the Republic (sic - now known as the American Legion). He was always an active and interested member of this organization and recently was appointed aide on the National Commander's staff. He also served as city assessor for several terms.

As yet no funeral arrangements have been made but the services will probably be held Monday from the Lutheran church.

Two Unusual Old Guns Are Among the Objects Added to Historical Collection

Relics belonging to the late John T. AXLINE have just been given to the Jefferson County Historical society for the historical collection at the Public library. Among these are two very interesting old guns, one being a muzzle loading, cap rifle with the lock under the barrel, and another a rifle made from an army musket.

A pewter teapot of great age and historic association also was given the society together with valuable books.

The rifle made from a musket was used in the first military company organized here after the Civil war, Company A, Iowa State Militia, of which Mr. AXLINE was first sergeant.

The other rifle was brought from Mr. AXLINE's grandfather from Virginia to Kentucky and thence to Excelsior Springs, Mo.
