Sarah E. HERALD (sic - HERROLD) was born in Pennsylvania, February 28th, 1817, died in Jefferson county, Iowa, July 14th, 1872.

At the age of six years she was bereft of both her parents and cast upon the charities of earth. But while yet a child she committed her ways to God; and when at the age of seventeen she was married to her now sorrowing husband, she was an acceptable member of the M. E. Church. She became the mother of fourteen children, four of whom preceded her in death. She was the kind mother, faithful wife, and true christian. She resided seventeen years in Washington county, in this State; afterward removed to this county, and here at her home she died. Her death resulted from a lingering and most painful disease arising from decayed teeth affecting the jaw, slowly eating it away, and finally penetrating the brain, when death suddenly ensued.

In her dying moments she repeated the names of two or three of her children, and said, "The Lord called and I must go!-- Go where?" and directing her eyes upward, breathed out her soul to God.

"So fades a summer cloud away,
So sinks the gale when storms are o'er,
So gently shuts the eye of day,
So dies a wave along the shore.
