A Pioneer of 1837.

Eli COX, a resident of Jefferson county since 1837, died at his home in Cedar township Wednesday after an illness of little more than twenty-four hours. Mr. COX was born in Adair county, Ken., October 15th, 1823, and came to Iowa with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. COX, one of the early families of this county, when a lad of fourteen. He had lived in Round Prairie and Cedar townships through all the intervening years. November 26th, 1847, he was married to Louisa Jane LITTON, a daughter of another pioneer family. The wife and two children, Charles L. of Cedar township, and John W. COX of Whitewater, Col., survive him. All were present at the funeral. Other members of the family now dead were well known in the county--Mrs. Elizabeth A. STEWART, Mrs. Charlotte CONDOR (sic - CONDER), Burton, Albert A. and Minnie L. COX. Mr. COX was a farmer all his life, a very successful business man as well, and had large holdings of land in the county. He was a man who was held in high esteem in the community in which he had lived so long and with whose development he was directly connected. Many old friends and neighbors will join the family in mourning his death. Funeral services were held Sunday, conducted by Rev. Jonathan Lee.
