Death of John COPELAND.

John COPELAND, who has been sick for a long time, died at his home on north Court street Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock. Mr. COPELAND has not enjoyed good health for some time and the past ten days had suffered a great deal. He has not been a resident of Fairfield but a year or two, moving here from Des Moines township. He was a man highly respected by all who knew him. Mr. COPELAND leaves four children, all grown. Deceased was about eighty years old (sic - 64). A short service will be held at the home to-morrow morning at nine o'clock and the remains will be taken to Mt Zion church, southeast of Libertyville, where the funeral will be held. The remains will be interred in the cemetery there.

The death of John W. COPELAND, an old resident of Jefferson county, occured this city yesterday afternoon. He had been in ill health for a long time, and his condition has been very critical for several weeks past.

A Veteran Gone.

John W. COPELAND died in this city the 3d inst., and his remains were interred in Mt. Zion cemetery, southwest of Libertyville, Thursday afternoon. Rev. J. A. Boatman had charge of the funeral services, and the body was given a soldier's burial under directions of comrades of George Strong Post, G. A. R. Mr. COPELAND was born in Jefferson county, Ind., December 27th, 1830, where he grew to manhood. When the civil war broke out he enlisted as a member of Company A, Fifty-fifth Indiana infantry, and saw long and hard service. In 1865, with his wife and family, he removed to this county, where the remaining years of his life were spent. He resided on a farm in Des Moines township for many years, but removed to Fairfield in 1893. Mr. COPELAND had been in ill health for five or six years past, and was confined to his bed about two months. John COPELAND had a wide acquaintance throughout Jefferson county and he enjoyed the confidence and respect of all who came in contact with him in business and social affairs. He was a good man and citizen. His wife and six children, E. G., O. P., John, Anna and W. F. COPELAND, and Mrs. Samantha PEEBLER, all of whom reside in this county, survive him. The family desires to express its thanks to neighbors and friends, the Grand Army Post and Epworth league for sympathy and assistance in its time of distress.

Note: John is buried in Winsell Cemetery, southwest of Libertyville; Mt. Zion Cemetery is southeast of Libertyville. He is noted as being in the 55th Indiana Infantry in his obituary, but on his gravestone is noted "51 Ind. Reg." The "Grand Army" post mentioned above is the G.A.R. Post, or Grand Army of the Republic, and is the fore-runner of the American Legion. John's wife Mary Jane TOLER died in 1887 and is buried with him in Winsell Cemetery.
