FUNERAL SERVICES OF NATHAN TALBERT

Funeral services for Nathan TALBERT, of 2428 Channing Way, Civil war veteran, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at local undertaking parlors, under the auspices of Lookout Mountain post No, 88, G. A. R. An impressive feature of the service was the reading of the poem, "He Giveth His Beloved Sleep," by Rebecca Naylor, life-long friend of the TALBERT family.

Nathan TALBERT was born October 23, 1841, in Hamilton county, Ind. When he was seven years old, his family moved to Pleasant Plain, Iowa. Although reared in a Quaker settlement, when the Civil war began he answered the call of his country and enlisted in Company K, Seventh Iowa infantry. His regiment joined the army of Tennessee, and marched with Sherman to the sea. In 1865, when the war was over, he took part in the great review at Washington, D.C., and with the thousands of boys in blue, he marched down Pennsylvania avenue, before the steps of the capitol, where Abraham Lincoln reviewed the victorious troop. Mr. TALBERT was married in Pleasant Plain, Ia., September 3, 1865, to Elva CONNER. In 1876, with their family of four children, they came to California, and settled in Sacramento county. From there they moved to Santa Clara county, where he was interested in the growth of orchards. Mr. TALBERT was always a quiet, retiring man, of kind and gentle disposition and was devoted to his family. Born of a long line of Quaker stock, he lived the faith of his fathers and by precept and example he instilled and inspired in his family those sterling principles of honesty and integrity for which the church stands. He leaves his widow and four children, Mrs. Elin WILSON of Lodi, Sarah Alma TALBERT, Franklin Linburn TALBERT, former instructor and the university, and Lillian Elva TALBERT, supervisor of education at the State Teachers' college, San Francisco.
