John LEENY was born in Kerry county, Ireland, June 24th, 1841. He came to the United States at the age of 14 years. During his earlier days he lived as a laborer near St. Louis, Mo., finally moving to Jefferson county, Iowa, where, about the year 1861 (sic - Sept. 12, 1858) he was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca E. LONG. To this union there were born seven children, of whom four are living at present, George LEENY of New Mexico; Hetty COLTON of Putman county, Mo.; Olive POSTER of Kirkwood, Ill., and Alfred LEENY of Oskaloosa, Ia.
Bereft of his companion in the year 1878 near Pleasant Plain, Ia. When in the year 1885 he was united again in marriage near Fairfield, Ia., to Mrs. Mary E. WHITE (note: nee CLOKE), who survives him as his widow.
He was raised up under the influence of the Roman Catholic church until he was about thirty years old, when he was converted to the Christian faith and united with the church of the U. B. in Christ and lived an exemplary Christian life until his demise. When the church of the United Brethren divided he became identified with the branch called the Radical Wing Brothers. John LEENY was a good citizen, a par-excellent neighbor, kind and loving father and husband, respected and beloved by all who knew him and at the time of his decease he was Ass't Sup't of the Graysville Sunday school. He was known to be ever ready with his ability and means to help along any and all efforts made in behalf of temperance and morality.
Deceased moved to Putman county, Mo., Dec., 1896, where he bought and settled on what is known as the David Crook's place one mile south of Glendale, Mo., where he followed the business of farming until July, 1902, when he was stricken down with the disease which baffled the skill of the best physicians. When they advised him to take a change of climate he went to Roton, New Mexico, to the house of his son. He arrived there Dec. 1st, 1902, put himself under the care of the best doctor, who pronounced the disease to be tuberculosis of kidneys, resulting in affection of lungs of which he died Dec. 25th, 1902. He leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss.
