Passing of a Penn Pioneer.

James EMRY, who died in Penn township April 23d, was one of the pioneer settlers of that portion of Jefferson county, his residence here dating back to 1839. Mr. EMRY was a native of Randolph county, Ind., and was born in 1821. He was married to Miss Catherine SHOCKLEY in 1842, and their marriage is said to have been the first performed in this county according to the ceremony of the Society of Friends, of which both were members. Mrs. EMRY died in 1897, after she and her husband had experienced a happy married life of more than half a century. Seven of their children are now living--T. L. EMRY at Brighton, Eli in Keokuk county, T. J., G. J. and Mrs. Wm. POOL in this county, and a son and daughter in Nebraska. Mr. EMRY had resided on a farm in the community in which he died during all his life in this county. He was a man of intelligence, the utmost honesty and the highest integrity. He had lived this life well and had discharged all its duties faithfully and fearlessly. His death will be very generally mourned among the people who knew him best during his long residence here.
