Front Page, Column 7FACTORY MAN IS KILLED AT WORK
Met Death At Packwood Tile Works When 5 Tons of Clay Caved In On HimBert ELLIS was instantly killed yesterday afternoon about 5:30 oclock at Packwood when about five tons of clay caved in on him while at work in the clay pit of the Steigleder & SON Tile factory. He was thrown against the car being loaded and his neck was broken. Clarence Cummings and Willard Baker were working with him and saw the clay fall. They were the first to reach him to try to extricate him.
County Coroner Dr. W. T. Webb and Sheriff Charles G. Butcher were called, but Dr. Webb found it unnecessary to hold an inquest. The body was taken to the J. B. Bottorff home where he had stayed. The remains were brought to this city this afternoon and shipped to Greenfield for burial. O. F. Steigleder accompanied the remains as far as Chariton, where they were met by the hearse.
Mrs. ELLIS who was about 40 years old, came to Packwood last spring and worked as a farm hand until about May 1 when he began work at the tile factory. A card in his pocket showed that he belonged to the Moose lodge, No. 1688 at Newton and he also carried a bank pass book on a Greenfield bank. He is survived by a brother John ELLIS of Oakdale, Calif., and a sister Mrs. SHEEVE at Greenfield.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I have no relation to the person(s) mentioned.Note: Bert's death certificate, while missing many details, noted that he was 43 years old (without indicating anything regarding a birthdate). It also noted that burial was to be at Packwood, which turned out to be in error, as both articles above state his body was taken to Greenfield (Adair Co., IA) for burial.
