… Samuel ALLENDER, who was one of the first settlers of Buchanan township, died Wednesday night at his home in the northwest part of town. He was about 80 years old and had been quite poorly for a number of years. A few years ago he moved from his farm about three miles northwest of Salina to this city. He was a good man. Funeral occured (sic) this morning at 10 o'clock.

Last Wednesday after an illness of nine weeks Samuel ALLENDER died at his home in this city, in his eighty-second year, leaving a widow and four children to mourn his loss.
Deceased was born in McConnelsburg, Pa., April 7, 1822, and came to Jefferson county with his parents when quite young and has since made it his home. In 1846 he was married to Eliza Jane GREEN and they raised a family of six children, four of whom are living: Mary E. WALTERS, of Spencer, Iowa; E. M., of Grand Junction, Colo.; James, in Van Buren county, and Wm., on the old homestead in Upper Richwoods. Thirteen years ago they left the old homestead and came to Fairfield to enjoy their declining years.
For fifty years or more deceased was a member of the Upper Richwoods M. E. church and was an exemplary Christian.
Funeral services were conducted from the home by Rev. Slack, of Salina, Friday of last week and the remains taken to Richwoods for interment.

Samuel ALLENDER, who had lived in Jefferson county more than sixty years, died at his home in this city Wednesday night. He was a Pennsylvanian, born in Bedford county, April 22d, 1822, and came to Iowa with his parents before he had attained his majority. He was married here to Eliza J. GREEN, who survives him, and they were the parents of six children. Four of these are now living. Emory M. resides at Grand Junction, Col.; Mrs. Mary E. WALTERS at Spencer; James H. in Van Buren county; and William on the old homestead. Mr. ALLENDER resided on a farm in Buchanan township during the active years of his life, but had been a resident of Fairfield for some time past. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church during most of his life, and was a man of excellent character and exemplary habits. He had been in ill health for a year or more past. The body was taken to Richwoods cemetery, near his old home, for interment Friday. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. L. Slack of Salina, assisted by Rev. Thos. Osborn of this city.
