A feeling of sadness cast a gloom over the Beckwith neighborhood last Wednesday when it was announced that Mrs. Charles LOTRIDGE was dead. Although not unexpected, yet it was sad news. Mrs. Thalia HOWARD LOTRIDGE was born April 30, 1831, in New York state. Sept. 13, 1848, at the early age of 17 she was united in marriage to Charles LOTRIDGE and they have traveled life's journey together for 62 years hand in hand, never murmuring or complaining, They emigrated from the eastern states to Iowa in the year of 1877 and located in Henry county near Trenton. In the year of 1878 they moved to Beckwith, purchasing the Overholser farm, and have lived there continuously until advancing age crept upon them and they sold their farm last spring and moved to the city of Fairfield. We have often heard her express a desire to go, saying that she was ready to leave this world for a better home. She was always of a robust nature, sickness never having any inroads on her system until advancing years came upon her and she was forced to give up hard work which was second nature to her. Her last sickness was of short duration. Although being feeble for some time, she was bedfast only two weeks. When the hand of the death messenger was laid upon her three days before her death, when she slipped from the present consciousness into that mysterious void that lies between life and death, once or twice strong love of family brought back the encircling shadow and she responded in silent tokens to the expressions of whose who watched by her bedside, but gradually she sank deeper into the eternal dream and on Wednesday at 11:30 all was over. She was more like a tired child falling to sleep at the good old age of 79 years, leaving a heart broken husband and a loved daughter Lydia, who are the only surviving members, one son Charles having died Jan. 25, 1888, her mother dying Dec. 26, 1896. Mrs. LOTRIDGE was sincerely loved by all who knew her for her loyal upright character, staunch friendship, and her willingness to do a favor whenever and wherever she could. Her home was her shrine. Thus goes out from our lives into that brighter home above, one whom we all loved and whom we all mourn. The funeral services were held at the Parsonville church and she was laid to rest in the beautiful Union Cemetery. The beautiful flowers that covered her casket were but silent messages of love from their many friends. Mr. LOTRIDGE and Miss Lydia desire to express their thanks to their many kind neighbors and friends who have been so good to them in their sorrow.
Thou art gone from us forever,
And to us can ne'er return.
But we can to go to thee to dwell,
If we live a crown to earn.
Farewell, friend and neighbor.Mrs. Jennie Root Prince.
