Friends sow seeds for local farmer

When Wilbur HORTON, hospitalized May 9 after suffering a heart attack, returned to his home May 17 with an order to stay inactive for a six-week recuperating period, his friends decided to pitch in and plant the crops for their neighbor.

Sowing corn and beans in HORTON's fields on Route 3 Monday and Tuesday were Delbert Crawford, Howard Smith, Larry Pohren, Rollin Howard, Bill Haines, Don Hickenbottom, Max Woods, Donald Copeland, Doug Crawford and Butch Martin. Lucille Chapman and Edith HORTON served refreshments to the workers.

Wilbur HORTON dies suddenly

Wilbur L. HORTON, 59, widely known horse exhibitor throughout Southeast Iowa, died suddenly at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at his home on Route 3, Fairfield.

HORTON had farmed and lived most of his life in Jefferson County. He is a member and past president of the Lockridge Rough Riders Saddle Club and has appeared at Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant a number of years.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Kincaid officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery east of Fairfield.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Iowa Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

Wilbur L. HORTON was born Dec. 30, 1923, in Jefferson County. He was the son of Clifford F. and Hattie E. CRILE HORTON.

He was married to Edith COPELAND Feb. 22, 1948, in Fairfield.

In addition to his widow HORTON is survived by two daughters: Becky BOYSE, Kalona, and Bettye Lu HORTON, Fairfield.

Other survivors are a brother, Carroll HORTON, Lockridge, and a sister, Maxine JOHNSON, Loveland, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and a sister.
