MRS. LOUISE HICKENBOTTOM
Hannah Louise MUNSON, daughter of Charles M. and Christine M. MUNSON was born in Kinda County, Sweden, August 9, 1836, departed this life March 19, 1926 at the ripe old age of 89 years, 7 months and 10 days.
At the age of 13, with father, mother and 3 brothers and 2 sister, May 3, 1849 she started from Kinda County, Sweden. After a trip across country, they left Gottenberg, Sweden by boat, June 16 and on the 16th day of August landed in New York City, went down the Erie canal t oBuffalo (sic). Cholera was prevalent on ship board and her father and mother contracted the disease and her father died August 26.
The widowed mother and 6 children continued their journey to Chicago and then to Rock Island and by boat to Burlington and from there by team to the Shillerstrom home at Four Corners, Sept. 30, 1849 and from there they moved to a lob cabin Salina. Some of the comforts of that log cabin were puncheon floors, stick chimney, and grease lamps. While they were at Four Corners her younger sister Rosena C. was born, this was 2 months and 22 days after her fathers death.
December 6, 1865 Miss Hannah Louise MUNSON and Joseph HICKENBOTTOM were united in marriage and made their home at Parsonsville. Two children were born to this union, Perry of Glendale, Iowa, and Mrs. Ada Marshall MILLER of Fairfield, Iowa, who remain to mourn their parents departure. Her husband died August 22, 1911. After her husband's death she made her home with her daughter and her son and after a fall and injury Tuesday she gradually grew worse until she passed away.
She had 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, all of whom are living except one great grand son, Verne HICKENBOTTOM. Her only surviving sister, Mrs. Rose TAYLOR resides at Creston, Iowa, and is her youngest sister. Her brother Oscar F. was killed by the Winnebago Indians in Wayne county, Nebraska, May 20, 1870 at the age of 24.
Sister HICKENBOTTOM was confirmed in the Lutheran church early in life. She and her husband were devout Christians and labored in the Parsonsville church together. Their home was the Preachers Haren, he could always find a welcome there, many ministers and others joined in the hospitality of their splendid Christian home.
Mrs. HICKENBOTTOM taught a Bible class in the Sunday school for about 50 years beginning in the Union school house before the Parsonsville church was built and then she took up her work of teaching in the Parsonsville M. E. church. She was a splendid Bible student and teacher. What a wonderful heritage of faith and good work her husband and herself have handed down to their posterity and friends. Their home and hearts were never too small to make their friends and neighbors happy and comfortable. What we of these times do owe to the memory of these blessed pioneers of our county and also of the Christian church in this county.
She goes to receive the reward her master has for those who have kept the faith.
The funeral services were held in the Parsonsville Methodist Episcopal church and were conducted by Rev. T. S. Pool, a former pastor and Rev. H. E. Butler, the present pastor. Rev. T. S. Pool preached the funeral sermon, M. E. Toothacre, president of the Farmers Bank at Burlington, Ia., a Sunday school student of Mrs. HICKENBOTTOM on behalf of her students gave a splendid tribute to the life, character and wonderful influence for good and right of his former Sunday school teacher. Interment was made in the Union cemetery.
