DEATH OF WILLIAM M. READ. At his home three miles southwest of this city Sunday afternoon.....Although he had led a somewhat retired life for a few years past, Mr. Reed was a man of wide acquaintance throughout Jefferson County, and had been quite prominent in business and political affairs. He was born near Pittsburgh, Pa. in 1821. In 1845 he was married to Miss Bottom, who survives him, and they came to Jefferson County in 1849. For a number of years succeeding that time, Mr. Read owned and operated a large water power flouring mill on Cedar Creek, south west of this city, where he also erected a fine residence and other necessary buildings. Early in the ‘60’s he built on the same site a fine two-story brick mill, to be operated either by water or steam power, and for a number of years did a fine business. His location away from a railroad proved a great disadvantage to him later, however, and he was finally compelled to abandon the business altogether. Since that time he has been engaged in stock raising and farming. In earlier years he held several offices of honor and trust, twice representing his county in the State Senate while the capitol was at Iowa City and also at Des Moines. Mr. Read was the father of nine children, seven of whom survive him.....Mrs. David Heron lives at Colorado Springs, Col; John at Rapid City, Dakota; A. L. and James at Terraville, Dakota; Nicholas at Mankato, Kans.; Jennie and David with their mother. Congregational church. Masonic orders.....
