April 21, 2005Hershel Mendenhall, 89, of Wayland, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Parkview Home in Wayland.
A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Plain Friends Church, with the Rev. Stan Bauer and the Rev. Karen Mendenhall officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Plain Friends Cemetery at a later date.
Mr. Mendenhall deeded his body to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology.
Memorials have been established for Quakerdale Children's Home, Pleasant Plain Friends Church of William Penn University.
Mr. Mendenhall was born May 6, 1915, in Hartford, Conn., the son of Lloyd Hadley and Bertha Louise Hammond Mendenhall. He married Mildred Coffin Nov. 27, 1941, in Pleasant Plain. She died March 24, 2002.
He grew up in Earlham and graduated from Earlham High School in 1932. He attended Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, and graduated in 1941 from William Penn College in Oskaloosa.
He worked in mental hospitals in the Civilian Public Service during World War II.
Mr. Mendenhall was a pastor at the Woolson Friends Church near Richland. He was also pastor at the Middle River Friends Meeting near Carlisle, while acting as business manager for William Penn College. He moved to Pleasant Plain and farmed from 1949 until his retirement in 1993 except for three years when he worked as treasurer and bookkeeper for the Friends Africa Mission in Kaimosi, Kenya. He moved to Wayland in 2002.
He was a member of Pleasant Plain Friends Church.
Survivors include one brother, Charles Mendenhall of Earlham.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Orpha Hadley; adopted son, Russell; and one brother, Orville.
