Keosauqua

Shirley E. DeHART, 92, of Keosauqua, Iowa, passed away on July 27, 2019, at Keosauqua Health Care Center (note: in Van Buren Co., IA). She was born on May 21, 1927, in Mt. Sterling, Iowa, to Ren and Wynona DAVIS JACK. Some of her fondest memories growing up included being taught by her mother in grade school, the local pickle factory, and her close friendships.

There was a railroad going through Mt. Sterling which her father worked for and she would hop on the train and ride to Cantril. Soon after graduating high school, Shirley married Joe DeHART on November 19, 1945, in Keokuk, Iowa. Joe and Shirley raised six children Doug, Bill, Steve, Judy, Janet, and Jill.

Shirley was a housewife and also worked for many years at the Van Buren County Extension Office. She was an active member of the Center Chapel United Methodist Church where she played the organ and piano. Shirley was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, United Methodist Women, Eastern Star, and was a past Worthy Matron. Joe and Shirley enjoyed attending athletic games and competitions, often recalling their own feats.

The (sic) loved playing pinochle, assisting with the Indianola Balloon Races, Western-style square dancing, and even attended the National Square Dancing Convention. Shirley's happiest times were when she was cooking and preparing for family dinners. She was known for her pickles, strawberry jam and homemade ice cream. Shirley was a strong woman who left a great impact on those she knew; she will be forever missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Joe; six children, Doug (Bobbie) DeHART of Keosauqua, Bill (Karen) DeHART of Runnells, Steve (Toni) DeHART of Keosauqua, Judy (Matt) MANNING of Keosauqua, Janet (Jerry) JENSEN of Ankeny, Jill (Terry) LOUTH of Birmingham; 14 grandchildren, Rick DeHART, Jason DeHART, Michelle (DeHART) PAGLIAI, Kris DeHART, Monica (DeHART) HEARD, Allison DeHART, Stephanie (DeHART) VANNEVEL, Nathan MANNING, Amanda (MANNING) MARAS, Andrew MANNING, Ashley (CALHOUN) RATHJEN, Jake LOUTH, Zach LOUTH; fourteen great-grandchildren and another one expected soon; sister-in- law, Frances JACK; and a special friend, Lil Perry.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ren and Wynona JACK; a grandson, Colby CALHOUN; and siblings, Robert JACK, Dave JACK, and Barbara JACK HAMBURG.

It was Shirley's wish to be cremated. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at the Keosauqua United Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Kathryn Hart officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Center Chapel Cemetery (note: in Van Buren Co., IA).
