JAMES ROBERT CARR
Ottumwa

James Robert CARR, 96, of Ottumwa, died at 12:10 p.m. July 5, 2019 at Vista Woods Care Center in Ottumwa (note: in Wapello Co., IA).

He was born September 30, 1922 in Ottumwa to James and Frances HILLER CARR. Bob married Anna Marie McINERNEY on August 23, 1947 and she preceded him in death in April 23, 2011.

Attending St. Mary Elementary School through 8th grade, Bob graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1942. When Central's basketball team earned a berth to state his freshman year, Bob was named to the First Team All-tournament.

Enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, he attended St. Ambrose University and University of Notre Dame. After basic training in San Diego, he was assigned to A Battery, 155mm Gun Battalion, 3rd Corps Artillery where he served in Guam, Guadalcanal and Okinawa. during World War II. Returning to Ottumwa, he had worked for O'Hara Hardware and then for Northwestern Bell Telephone for 37 ½ years, retiring in 1982.

Bob was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation where he had been baptized in 1922. He was dedicated to attending Mass and daily prayer. He was also a member of Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars, O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion, Past Grand Knight and member of McMullen Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

Bob enjoyed pool, basketball and baseball. He was even a member of the John Deere Ottumwa Works semi-pro team for 7 years. He coached Little League Baseball and installed the Midwest fields first lights.

Surviving are his children, Mike (Sue) CARR of Fairfield, Pat (Pauline) CARR of Clinton, Bob (Patti) CARR of Palo and Cathy (John) ASHMORE of Bloomfield; 9 grandchildren, Jessica (Nathan) PORTER of Libertyville, Luke (Beth) PERRY of Austin, TX, Kate CARR of Clinton, Ben (Kaitlin) CARR of Clinton, Will CARR of Clinton, John (Lisa) WOOLLUMS of Ottumwa, Kara (Joe) GILBERT of Ottumwa, Lindsey (Matt) RUMP of Fort Madison and Dane (Hailey) CARR of Cedar Rapids; 16 great-grandchildren, Aiden, Emerson, Ethan and Adalyn PORTER, Tanner and Jake YOUNG, Kaloe, J.J. and Hayden GILBERT, Addison and Avery RUMP, Jonah and Charlotte "Charlie" CARR, Cooper, Dylan Ree and Peyton PERRY; a brother, Bill (Nancy) CARR of Liberty, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary LAKIN and Helen EMRY; two brothers, Bud CARR and Jack CARR.

A Mass of Christian Burial wil be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary of the Visitation with Father Patrick Hilgendorf presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Shafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to Seton Catholic School or St. Mary of the Visitation.
