MICHAEL VERNON COONEY
Washington

Michael Vernon COONEY, 61, died Wednesday afternoon, June 26, 2019, at Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa (note: in Mahaska Co., IA) following a brief illness. He was born February 20, 1958, in Washington to Robert Dean and Joan Maxine SHERADEN COONEY. Mike grew up in the Rubio area and attended Brighton, Prairie Flower and Glenwood Schools. He was a long-time resident of Washington under the management of Rescare and Optimae and worked at Washington County Development Center taking pride in sorting cans on the line.

Mike enjoyed bike riding, watching TV, especially westerns, being with family, cats and dogs, folding clothes, McDonald's, ice tea, pop, pancakes, pumpkin pie and sleeping. He is survived by his father, Dean COONEY of Oskaloosa, sisters: Nancy BROWN (Gale) of Oskaloosa, Sandy JOHNSON (Carl) of Metropolis, IL and one brother, Pat COONEY (Pam) of Pittsfield, IL, two aunts: Evelyn SMALL of Ottumwa and Marilyn AUGUSTINE (Richard) of Washington, IL, many nieces, nephews, cousins and his Optimae and WCDC family. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his mother in 2009.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Monday July 1, 2019, at the Gould Funeral Home in Richland with Pastor Ahron Cooney officiating. Burial will be in Clay Cemetery near Rubio. Visitation with the family will begin at 12:30 P.M. Monday immediately preceding the funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for WCDC and may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 908 15th Avenue East, Oskaloosa, IA 52577.
