LibertyvilleDonald "Don" Lee NANCE age 82 of Libertyville, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family.
Visitation for family & friends will be 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 23, 2019, at Behner Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 24, 2019, at Faith United Methodist Church with Chaplain Alan Paris officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Fell Cemetery, Libertyville, IA.
In-lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith United Methodist Church or Good Samaritan Society Hospice. Cards and memorials may be mailed to 302 Washington Street, Libertyville, Iowa 52567.
Don was born January 30, 1937, in Shelbina, MO to Jesse Lloyd and Jessie Irene (KEYTE) NANCE. He married Wanda Marie HUNTER on April 4, 1959. They were married 37 years before she passed away on July 20, 1996. Don blended his family by marrying Marilyn (BOOTH) ALLISON on March 6, 1999. This year they were married 20 years.
Don served in the Marine Corps in 1954-1957 at Camp Pendleton, CA. He lived in the Fairfield and Libertyville area most of his life. Don was a laborer at Loudens before he started working for the US Postal Service. He retired after 30 years of service as Libertyville postmaster. Don farmed and made various wood crafts for craft shows.
Don loved all sports and was a true Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He put up with teasing from family who were Iowa State Cyclone or Chicago Cubs fans. Don was a coach for the Ponytail Softball in Libertyville and organized the 1st Relay for Life Team.
Don was a very active member of the Faith United Methodist Church. He was co-chair of the church building committee, built and installed all interior wood work, and was sound room operator. He made craft items for and volunteered during bible school (sic). He would pick 75 - 100 lbs. of hickory nuts each winter and would give some for the church bazaar. At Christmas time Don would make 75-100 lbs. of peanut brittle and would give it away.
Don and Marilyn loved to travel personally or with 3 travel clubs. In his life time he visited all 50 states. Don and Marilyn enjoyed camping with family and friends and taking model "A" excursions. At 81 he started guitar lessons.
Don attended all sports, choir and band events of his grandchildren.
He will be missed by his wife, Marilyn NANCE of Libertyville, IA; 3 children, Jeffrey (Betty) NANCE of Marion, IA, Rhonda (Mike) BURKE of Fairfield, IA and Amy (Terry Mendiola) NANCE of Pearland, TX; 3 step daughters, Linda (Alan) BENNING of Waverly, IA, Rhonda (Steve) AIKENS of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX and Vicki (Alan) REBLING, Fairfield, IA; two grandchildren, Hunter SYMMONDS and Jayden BURKE; 8 step grandchildren, Allie BURRIS, Aaron BURKE, Dustin (Carissa) BURKE, Nicole BURKE, Kyle (Cassie) BENNING, Kaylee (Clayton) VETTE, Cheyenne AIKENS and Allison REBLING; 4 great grandchildren; and one sister, Arlene SPENCER of Ponchatoula, LA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 1st wife, Wanda; son, Gregory, brother Frank; sister, Darlene; a nephew and step grandchild.
