William Bates, born July 24, 1833 in New York state, and spent his boyhood days in Dunkirk, N.Y. This data has been transcribed for genealogical purposes; I am not related to the subject.
N. Y. Came west in early manhood and settled in Oquawka, Ill. Served three years in Co. E, 10th Ill. Inf. Married Permillia P. Mofford Sept. 4, 1866, who survives. Four children: Orvil F. Bates, Burns, Wyo.; Fay M. Bates, Perlee, Iowa; Mrs. Etta Miller, who died Apr. 2, 1910, and Rutherford H. Bates, Perlee, Iowa. Seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Came to Iowa with his family in 1870 and settled on a small farm northeast of Perlee. Died at Perlee Jan. 8, 1922, aged 88 years five months 14 days. Christian church. Interment in Fairfield City Cemetery.
