Esta Virginia Brown Hoffman, 91, of Pella and formerly of the Fairfield area, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Birmingham United Methodist Church in Birmingham, with the Rev. Michael Renken officiating. Burial will be in Spencer Cemetery in Stockport.

Family visitation will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Behner Funeral Home, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

The family requests memorials to Hilltop Manor North in Pella.

Mrs. Hoffman was born April 23, 1913, in Stockport, the daughter of Nathaniel and Eva Runyon Brown. She married Van A. Hoffman April 21, 1934, in Monmouth, Ill. He died April 12, 1974.

She attended Stockport Community Schools and graduated in 1931 at the top of her class. She then attended Parsons College in Fairfield and earned her teaching certificate. She taught in the Van Buren rural school system for two years. She was a homemaker while her husband farmed.

The couple lived in numerous communities in Iowa and Illinois until her husband's death.

Mrs. Hoffman resided in Fairfield until 1998 when she moved to Hilltop Manor in Knoxville.

Her pasttimes included reading, working, crossword puzzles, playing bingo and watching Jeopardy, historical or educational events on TV. She also participated in Central College student assignments to interview the elderly.

Survivors include three daughters, Gloria Miles and husband Jay of Knoxville, Karen Vinyard and husband Neal of Hot Springs, Ark., and Judith Douglas and husband Marvin of Burlington; two sons, Kenneth Hoffman and wife Dorothy of Indianola and Dan Hoffman of Fairfield; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Richard Hoffman; six brothers, Ira, Asa, Otto, Alva, Arlow and Arza; and five sisters, Alma, Lola, Zola, Iris and Lela.
