FairfieldJames (Jim) Wesley BATES, formerly of Fairfield and Stockport, passed away peacefully at Parkview Nursing Home in Fairfield, Iowa, on Sunday, January 27, 2019.
His only living relative is a nephew, Mike BRADSHAW of Richmond HIll, Georgia, but he was much loved by friends, co-workers, and students at Maharishi University of Management, where he was Director of the Library from 1983 until his retirement in 2005.
Him was born near Lay Dam, Alabama on December 3, 1934, to Nettie (WILSON) and George BATES. He received his degree in Library Sciences at Duke university and worked at Florida State College for 13 years. He was known for his deep spirituality and gentle, caring and kindly demeanor. During his tenure at MUM, he earned awards for his service but his most prized award was the handmade one signed by the student body. A friend wrote of him, "from foreign students to animals, all who knew him knew the kindness of his heart which was readily apparent and ready to give."
Jim loved good art, classical music, and astronomy. After retirement moved to rural Stockport in order to have a less light-polluted environment in which to watch the stars. A memorial may be announced later, but caring friends are invited to donate toward a "Maharishi Yagya for the Departed," which he desired. More than two thirds of the cost has already been raised. Gifts may be given to the gofundme.com campaign 'Jim Bates Yagya
