Frances Bernice Hadley, age 96, 400 Highland in Fairfield, died at 1:05 P.M. Monday, March 21, 2005 at the Jefferson County Hospital Living Care Center.

Born on November 7, 1908, she was the daughter of Emmett and Myrtle Heald Hadley on the family farm, ten miles north of Fairfield. She was raised with a strong sense of responsibility and a dedicated work ethic. She attended the one room country schoolhouse near the farm until her high school years during which she moved to Fairfield. She attended Fairfield High School from the fall of 1920 until her graduation in the spring of 1923.

She entered Parsons College in Fairfield in the fall of 1923 and was the youngest college student in the state of Iowa at that time. Frances graduated from Parsons College with a major in Latin in 1927. The following year she attended the University of Iowa for one semester.

Later she attended and graduated from Business School in Oskaloosa, after which she was able to teach typing and shorthand. One summer Frances lived in Chicago, Illinois to study under the shorthand founder, Mr. Gregg.

Frances taught in three states (Iowa, South Dakota and Illinois) for over forty years. She taught Latin, Spanish, business subjects, and was often in charge of publishing the school annual. She taught for many years at Sparland, Illinois.

Her most recent teaching assignment was at Keota High School in Keota, Iowa from 1964-1969 after which she retired.

She was a dedicated educator and a caring family member. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Ferne Hadley Morgan.

Surviving are her niece Marsha Morgan Smith and husband Gary of West Des Moines, Iowa, two grandnieces, Laura Walthart (Brian) of Iowa City and Meg Smith of Orlando, Florida, and a great grandnephew Jackson Walthart of Iowa City.

Frances will be missed by many and remembered well by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 P.M. Thursday at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield with Pastor Ed Parker officiating. Interment will be in Richland Friends Cemetery at Richland.

The family will receive friends on Thursday prior to the funeral from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Suburban Heights Baptist Church in Fairfield.

Arrangements are in the care of the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
