Ridgefield, CTJoyce R. THOMPSON, 90, of Ridgefield, CT passed away peacefully on January 22, 2019 at Danbury Hospital. Joyce was born on June 30, 1928 in Fairfield, Iowa. She was the daughter of Robert R. RIDER and Ethel SIMONS.
She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1946 and attended Parsons College. She married W. Page THOMPSON in 1947. After the growth of her children Joyce lived and worked in NYC. She served as a secretary and coordinator of medical students at the Cornell University Medical School in NYC.
Joyce is remembered for her independent spirit, her inquiring mind, and smiling, friendly countenance. She loved to make people laugh and smile. She was also ageless. When she was 70 she went to Egypt with a group of college students. This was a trip of a lifetime for her and a source of wonderful memories.
Joyce's singular love was her gardens; she was in heaven when working in the garden. From May-September most of her time was spent in the gardens in and around her condo on Honeysuckle Lane at Fox Hill. In recognition of her effots Fox Hill named a garden in her honor in 2016. She was very proud of her work and for the joy that it brought to the people at Fox Hill.
In the "off season" Joyce enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, adult coloring books, and reading whatever interested her at the time (Virginia Wolfe, English mysteries, English history). She had a longstanding keen interest in science, particulary in astronomy. She was also a talented needle worker. She loved classical music (Mozart in particular), opera, and ballet (she was a season ticket holder to the Met for years). She was an accomplished piano player and had a singing voice that earned her a Julliard School of Music scholarship offer when she was young.
Joyce is survived by her sister, Roberta KINNEY of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, her 3 sons: Steven & wife Ellen of Portsmouth, RI; Page & wife Rodie of Orleans, MA; and Charles & wife Angela of Mahopac, NY, 5 grandchildren: Steven, Seth, Blaine, Chase, and Ross and 1 great grandson, Nolan, aged 1. Joyce also leaves a nephew, Robert KINNEY of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, his wife Jan and their daughter, Paige.
Services will be private. For those interested in remembering Joyce, a donation to the Ridgefield Garden Club (P.O. Box 105, Ridgefield, CT 06877) would please her.
